Unsworth Elementary is named after Unsworth Road. Alfred Unsworth owned a farm in this area in 1891.
Alfred Unsworth was born in Liverpool, England in 1868, second son of Mr. & Mrs. J.T. Unsworth. He received his education at the Royal Institution School and Rossal school. Upon graduation he went to work in the office of the Liverpool London Globe Assurance Co., but left for Canada in early 1891. After arriving in Chilliwack in 1891, he purchased and cleared land on what is now called Unsworth Road, named in his honour. He specialized in growing fruit and flowers, and was a past member of the horticultural society. He also served as a warden of both St. Thomas Anglican and St. John’s Anglican churches, as well as on the school board. He married Kathleen Merton Hawkshaw on September 9, 1908, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W.S. Hawkshaw. Alfred Unsworth passed away October 4, 1951. Kathleen Merton (Hawkshaw) Unsworth passed away April 17, 1965.
