The community of Greendale was originally called Sumas until 1947 when the name “Greendale” was requested by the Sumas Settlement Board. The name change was requested due to the confusion caused by the name of the adjoining municipality: the District of Sumas (now part of the City of Abbotsford), and also Sumas, Washington.
