Mount Northgraves is named after Acting Bombardier George Allen Northgraves.
On August 19, 1942, Canadian infantry and supporting units landed during the amphibious assault at Dieppe. Taking part in the raid was George Allen Northgraves, who had resided in Chilliwack for two years. Northgraves joined the 16th Anti‑Aircraft Battery in June 1940 and proceeded overseas to England in 1941. On September 14, 1942, his father, Denton Northgraves of McConnell Road, received a cablegram informing him of his son’s death (Ferguson, 2009).
In 1947, geographical features were named by an agency of the federal government, the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical names after receiving a list of names of Canadian servicemen from Chilliwack who were killed during the Second World War From Canada’s Department of National Defence. The names were divided by province and were to be assigned to geographical features close to the place of enlistment (Grainger, 1998, p.82).
Mount Northgraves is located between Yola and Cantelon creek, east of Welch Peak.
