Vedder Crossing derives its names from the Volkert Vedder family who arrived in the area in the 1860’s.
Volkert Vedder was born in Schenectady, New York on November 3, 1808. Around 1830 he married Agnes Swart (b. ca.1813-d-1852 in N.Y). He made his home in Chicago around 1848, but went to California in 1850, and returned to his old home the next year returned with his sons, Adam and Albert. Volkert Vedder passed away January 31, 1898 at the age of 90 years.
