Sardis is said to have been named when Althea Vedder was asked to name the new community. Apparently, Vedder opened her bible at random and placing down her finger on a page, Sardis was chosen. According to The Bible, Sardis was a seat of one of the seven churches of Asia.
The Bible reads: “Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy” (Revelation 3:4, New International Version).
