Little Mountain Elementary is named after Little Mountain, which is nearby. Little Mountain was previously named Mount Shannon.
Little Mountain Elementary School began as a three room school in 1954. By 1959, the school had grown to nine rooms. The school served a rapidly growing residential population and in 1961 it was necessary to find additional accommodations to house the 355 students enrolled at the school.
